Argostoli

The center of the island. One of the most popular places, that is full of life all the year. Provides al services from whatever you need. It has beautiful places to walk, enjoy a meal or go shopping. The only National Park Mt.Ainos situated in our asland. The park stretches over 3,000 hectares and its highest peak is Megas Soros that reaches 1,628 m. What is so special about this Park is that a single species of fir called Abies Cephalonica grows at altitudes of 600-1,600 metres and covers ⅔ of the park’s area.

The Monastery of Kipoureon

Is located in the peninsula of Paliki, 15 km from Lixouri. The location of this monastery is amazing, as it has been constructed on top of a rock, 90 meters above the sea. The view to the Ionian Sea and the wild coastline is magnificent, which makes it a sight worth visiting if you are in the area.

The Venetian Castle of Saint George

The Castle of Saint George is located 7 km southeast of Argostoli, above the village Peratata Kefalonia. It has a polygonal shape and covers an area of 16,000 sq. m. This Castle was originally built in the 12th century by the Byzantines but it was mostly the Venetians who gave it its present form. In fact, its external walls were built in 1504 by the Venetians.The castle is ruined today and only a few buildings survive. It was not only the time and wars that caused its damages. This castle also suffered a lot from the earthquake that hit Kefalonia in 1956.

Acropolis of Sami
Ancient Sami was a powerful fortified town whose ruins are found in Lapitha Mountain, over the port town of Sami Kefalonia. This town was an autonomous and independent state with its own coin inhabited from the Paleolithic Times. A strong and densely populated town with strong fortifications, it was located on top of the cliff. Several references of Ancient Sami are found in Homer’s poems (Heliad, Odyssey) when Sami fought in the Trojan War. Though, in 188 B.C, Sami lost its autonomy and freedom during the siege from the Romans. During the Roman times, Ancient Sami flourished again due to the trade development and the increasing population.
